About Me:

I can find the solution [1]
User: GabeHarris , City: Reston[1]
Luckily I've been able to learn lots of things in my lifetime, but there's infinitely more things that I just don't know. I am resourceful enough to find a solution to any problem I come across (except how to grow a money tree in my back yard), and I won't stop until I overcome an obstacle. I believe people do great things not by having the most unique idea in the world, but by combining existing ideas and principles in unique ways to solve different problems and formulate better solutions.

I can write HTML [1]
User: GabeHarris , City: Reston[1]
I've become fairly proficient at writing HTML/XHTML/CSS. I started out as a hack teaching myself to do table base designs, and I have evolved over the years through my professional career and through furthering my education (both formally and via online tutorials and learning aids.) I don't believe there's anything I can't do with HTML, but admittedly there are things I'd have to look up.

I can use Photoshop [1]
User: GabeHarris , City: Reston[1]
Photoshop has become my main tool for the initial stages of designing web sites. I "grew up" working with vector graphics (screen printing), so I was more in-tune with Illustrator, but I have familiarized myself with Photoshop and its advantages for web images. The main thing I've learned is that anything is possible- just play with the program and keep track of what you do to get good looking results. I feel comfortable using the program to manipulate images (like for my family's holiday greeting cards) and creating user interfaces and full web site layouts and designs.

After three college courses and countless hours of experimenting (mostly on MySQL) I feel comfortable with SQL. I wouldn't qualify myself as a full-bore DBA or anything, but I understand all of the syntax and rules for creating a solid database and manipulating its data.

I understand VB.NET [1]
User: GabeHarris , City: Reston[1]
I can create and maintain forms with VB.NET. I'm familiar with OOP in VB.NET and can use VB.NET for accessing and modifying databases. I understand how to write functions and subroutines, when to use variables (scope and lifetime), how to use controls and their events and properties, and how to write well-commented code.

I know web 2.0 [1]
User: GabeHarris , City: Reston[1]
Sure, there are dozens of definitions of web 2.0, and it's an annoying cliche already, but I understand what it is. Web 2.0 is viral, it's interactive, it's driven by the user not just by the publisher. The graphics and interfaces for web 2.0 are shiny, slick, crisp, bold and clear. Web 2.0 is full of XML, AJAX, JavaScript, API's, and mash-ups. It's about freedom for the end-users to take control of the web and personalize it as much as possible.

Wire a house [1]
User: GabeHarris , City: Reston[1]
Yep, good old fashioned manual labor. Get me a set of prints and I can wire your house as it's being built. I'd have to reference your local code books to be sure to pass inspection, but you'd have electricity when I was done.

I could also wire you new office building, and commercial electric work is actually WAY more fun than residential. There's no feeling like pulling BX off of several 100' reels of wire, and there's no sound like the roto-zips cutting through the steel cover of some 12/4 wire.

I can teach you what I know [1]
User: GabeHarris , City: Reston[1]
I don't know all that much, but I'll explain it to you very clearly if you ask. If you don't understand the first time I explain it, that's because I didn't do my job and I'll try harder the second time using better examples (and third, and fourth, ad nauseum.) I love when people ask me questions for a few reasons: #1 it feels good to see some one have an "Aha!" moment, #2 it makes me think things from different perspectives, and #3 if I can teach some one something I prove to myself that I really know it.

I can use prototype [1]
User: GabeHarris , City: Reston[1]
Or scriptaculous or moo.fx to make a web site more fun. I'd be happier if I could write one of those libraries, but it feels good to know how to use them, too. It could be easy to overdo it with these "whiz-bangy" (not my word) JavaScript tools, but used tastefully they add elegance and style while enhancing usability on a web site.

I can write PHP [1]
User: GabeHarris , City: Reston[1]
I haven't had formal training with PHP (yet), but I've been trying to teach myself how to use it. It helps that I work on a web site at my day job that's running on PHP, and the webmaster helps me when I get stuck. I'm fairly comfortable with the procedural programming side of it, and I'm trying to learn through tutorials how to incorporate the OOP facets of the language. I understand the power of the language and I can't wait until I've completely harnessed the full capabilities of the language.

I can program in ASP.NET. And MS SQL Server. For fantastically thrilling database driven web applications.

Softball [1]
User: GabeHarris , City: Reston[1]
I can make a yard call on a softball field with a 300' fence. Even with the bases loaded in a real game.
